Clannad - Nadur
Nadur is Clannad's first album of new material since 1998's Grammy winning Landmarks, and features the full original line-up - siblings Moya, Ciaran and Pol Brennan, and their twin uncles Noel and Padraig Duggan - back together on record for the first time since the 1989 album Past Present. It is a fitting title for the coming together of this legendary Celtic family band; Nadur is the Gaelic word for Nature.
Indeed, Nadur is a very natural progression to the Clannad sound, which since the 70s, has been to fuse the traditional with the modern, the past and the future, with stunningly beautiful results. Nadur marks a forty year recording career which has seen such hits as 'Theme From Harry's Game', 'In A Lifetime', 'I Will Find You' and the soundtrack to the 'Robin of Sherwood' TV series.
'Not since Sean O Riada gave birth to the nation has there been such a unique talent to remind us of who we are, who we were and who we can be, ancient and modern at the same time. Clannad, we owe you.' - Bono

Clannad - Christ Church Cathedral - 2013
Yeats, “Down By The Sally Gardens”.

Martin Hayes - Under the Moon
Martin returned to County Clare to record Under the Moon, gaining the accompaniment of his father, famed fiddler P.J. Hayes, and guitarist Steve Cooney. He is also joined by his American musical partners, accordion virtuoso John Williams and Portland guitarist/fiddler Randal Bays. This album contains all the spirit and eloquence of his eponymous debut and adds even more passion. No one can get inside a tune--be it barndance, jig or reel--like Martin Hayes. Under the Moon is an album that stirs the heart and electrifies the mind! 1995

Brian Finnegan - The Ravishing Genius Of Bones [Irlanda]
The Ravishin Genius of Bones.
http://jarramplas.blogspot.com/2010/05/brian-finnegan-ravishing-genius-of.html
Ed Boyd y John Joe Kelly, la banda Crocked Still, Damien O’Kane o Aidan O’Rourke.
The ravishing genius of bones es un disco realizado con mucho mimo, y desde luego que por momentos (Starrs) parece realizado a capricho.

T with the Maggies - T with the Maggies (2010) [Irlanda]
T with the Maggies are Tríona & Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh & Moya Brennan
In May 2007, a remarkable gathering of traditional Irish musicians and singers came together at Vicar Street in Dublin to celebrate the life and music of Mícheál Ó Domhnaill, who, with Skara Brae and The Bothy Band, had been a pioneering force in Irish music.
Among the many artists and groups coming together that evening was an evocative performance by four of Ireland’s finest female singers. Tríona and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill (Míchaél’s two sisters, concert organisers and co-members of Skara Brae and The Bothy Band) were joined by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan and Moya Brennan of Clannad.
And so was born one of the most inspirational and heartening collaborations in traditional Irish music.
Tríona, Maighread, Mairéad and Moya, T with the Maggies, all come from the same corner of County Donegal (with Gaelic as their first language) and all have illustrious career histories. Each individual brings a unique and varied interpretation of their musical heritage but the result is one of the finest ever amalgamations of Irish female voices. They are real Celtic women!
Their first show in January 2009, at the Temple Bar Tradfest in Dublin, sold out immediately and they went on to perform at last year’s Irish Global Economic summit. A new recording of their repertoire favourite, Two Sisters, was commissioned by Sam Shepard, for his play, ‘Ages of the Moon’.
On the stage the ‘Maggies bubble with a mixture of instinctive tone, harmony and a generous helping of laughs. Each bring their choice of songs but mould them into the group with a unique soundscape of voice, piano, fiddle and harp. You can tell that they are the best of friends.

Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill - Welcome Here Again

The Old Dance School - Forecast
Harnessing energy from the elements, and inspiration from their adventures across wild British Landscape, the much anticipated colourful new release from The Old Dance School offers evocative images, blistering tunes and vivid songs with a virtuosity and vitality which draws from their classical and jazz informed backgrounds.
The Old Dance School began in 2006 as a gathering of friends in the garden of the old Betty Fox school of ballet in Birmingham, from where they take their name. Among the nettles, each would bring along a tune or a song for the group to experiement with. Three years, 30,000 miles, nearly forty festivals, and several trips to A and E later, the young seven piece ensemble’s second album Forecast delivers a startling take on contemporary folk that is both firmly-rooted and unashamedly forward-thinking, though right at the heart of the music, a close group of friends with a vivid collective ear for a good tune.
Their debut album Based on a True Story in 2008 was met with terrific reviews in the national press, championed by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris, and has secured The Old Dance School as one of the most exciting young bands to have emerged recently.
Forecast was recorded in the mountains of Snowdonia in February 2010, and The Old Dance School join forces here with legendary producer Calum Malcolm (The Blue Nile, Lau, Capercaille) who has captured their rich orchestrations, exciting fiddle duels, soaring brass, wind and vocal harmonies, and rip-roaring rhythms.

Kan - Sleeper
KAN is made up of Flook’s extraordinary virtuoso flutist Brian Finnegan from Armagh (N. Ireland), Lau’s deft and forward thinking fiddle player Aidan O’Rourke from Isle of Seil (Scotland), James Goodwin on percussion from Harrogate and guitarist Ian Stephenson of Selby in Yorkshire. If that’s not impressive then just look at SOME of those they have performed and recorded with: Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon, BBC Philharmonic, Blazin’ Fiddles, Liverpool Philharmonic, Kathryn Tickell, Northern Sinfonia, Wayne Shorter, Eddi Reader, Justin Currie, Roddy Woomble, Baltic Crossing, Adem, Sting, OMD , Jack Bruce, Bella Hardy, Nitin Sawhney, Katherine Jenkins, Jan Garbareck, Karine Polwart, Trilok Gurtu and on it goes.
That list above covers names synonymous with both folk and jazz which is reflected in the great cross-fertilisation taking place on this album. All band members are known for their diversification and for forging new sound. They have all worked togather before and from those collaborations a seed of an idea was born back in 2010, a genesis that the band’s name aptly reflects. Kan is derived from a Mayan word meaning ‘Yellow Seed’. Also, the Tzolkin is the sacred moon calendar of the Mayan people that connects the energy of heaven and earth, and 2010 was the year of Kan, a year according to the Mayan oracle to be a time for new beginnings, for planting the seed of some intention, project or dream, for taking a risk.
Whilst the Mayan gods may have favoured a care-free abandonement to their approach, KAN take a more considered route with their music. There is subtlety, grace and intricate finery in their arrangements the backbone of which is steeped in the Irish and Scottish tradtions of Brian and Aidan’s musical roots. But this is no ordinary traditional album, whilst it draws inspiration from the shores of the British Isles it has a pan-global undertone thanks to the broad experiences of each artist which has shaped their interpretations giving them that unique KAN sound.
The album opens to ‘Lori / One, Two, Three‘, a beautiful opening track, comprising of a tune that Aidan dedicated to border fiddle player Lori Watson followed by ‘One, Two, Three‘ which is based around three simple chords. More direct and personal influences take shape throughout the album including the very chilled Modul 1 with Ian taking inspiration from avant garde jazz pianist Nik Bartsch and on Mangatakk which features a tune (Emotional Storm) from Israeli double bass player Avishai Cohen.
Arrangements unfold in unexpected directions which gives this album a fresh and exciting sound, interlaced between melodies and flourishes are the whispers of a jazz inflected influence which bubble to the surface and submerge again. Each artist takes to the fore throughout delivering their promise of an homogenous quartet.
Brian and Aidan showed their colours when they released solo albums that forged new ground with ‘The Ravishing Genius Of Bones’ (2010) and ‘An Tobar’ (2008). IN this respect, Sleeper is maybe an album that would have happened sooner or later but the standard they have set here goes beyond expectations. KAN are one of those bands that are at the forefront of moulding and re-defining tradtional music along with the likes of The Gloaming, if this is the standard then the tradtional music scene has rewarding times ahead!

Flook - Haven [Uk-Irlanda]
The band was formed in 1995, originally by Becky Morris, with three flute-playing friends Sarah Allen, Brian Finnegan and Michael McGoldrick, (who left in 1997 to join Capercaillie). The band was briefly known as Three Nations Flutes.
Flook's 10th anniversary tour for Folkworks, included a concert at the Purcell Room (on 7 November 2005) as part of a week of "Folk in the Fall" on London's South Bank and another at the extraordinary new Sage Gateshead concert hall on the south bank of the River Tyne on 10 November 2005. Their third studio album, Haven, was released in October 2005.
At the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2006, Flook were awarded the award for Best Group. They also gave a short performance during the ceremony.
In December 2008 the band sent a Christmas message saying they were disbanding. "We wanted to wish you a very Happy Christmas and also to share some news with you," said a band press release. "After 13-plus years, hundreds of gigs, millions of miles traveled together and countless brilliant times, we've decided to call it a day. It might be forever or a prolonged pause, who knows, but we're all still great friends and will always remain so. This might sound like a cliché but it is deeply truthful."

Seamus Egan - When Juniper Sleeps [Irlanda]
Séamus Egan was born in Hatboro, Pennsylvania to Irish émigrés Mike and Ann Egan. At the age of three his parents moved the family back home to County Mayo, Ireland.
He learned accordion from Martin Donaghue. He saw Matt Molloy and James Galway on television and suddenly decided to take up the Irish flute. Seamus won the all-Ireland championship on four different instruments by the time he was 14.
Later work
When Mick Moloney founded Green Fields of America in 1977, Seamus joined up and took lessons from Mick on the banjo. Two years later he returned to Ireland and won the All-Ireland championship on banjo and mandolin[citation needed]. In 1985 he recorded a solo album Traditional Music Of Ireland.
In 1992 he joined Susan McKeown's band The Chanting House and appeared on a live album with them. Eileen Ivers was also a member of the band. In 1994 he founded Solas and has been on every one of their albums. In 1995 he recorded music for the quirky low-budget film The Brothers McMullen, directed by Edward Burns. He also co-wrote the hit "I Will Remember You" with Sarah McLachlan.
Egan is also the producer for Solas and has worked as producer for other artists, including American singer-songwriter Antje Duvekot.

Mary Black-Stories from The Steeples
This is the first studio recording from Mary Black in six years, and it's a collection that demonstrates an artist in full command of her bewitching vocal prowess. Throughout an impressive career, Mary has consistently demonstrated impeccable taste in her choice of material, and the evidence presented here suggests that her ear for seeking out songs of utmost grace and beauty is as keen as ever. With a voice that has only gained in depth and resonance over the years, Mary brings her trademark warmth and sincerity, casting light and shade amongst the lyrics to create her own personal space amongst the words of carefully chosen songwriters. Never one to rest on her laurels, we're gifted songs from familiar friends such as Shane Howard, Eric Bogle and Julie Matthews, alongside burgeoning writing talents, including Danny O'Reilly and Ricky Lynch.
Sharing the stage with a number of guests, Stories From The Steeples contains three duets: the beguiling "Lighthouse Light" features Janis Ian in a perfectly balanced performance that whets the appetite for further exploration of this winsome partnership; the robust, soulful voice of Imelda May joins Mary on an affirmative song of place and belonging, "Mountains To The Sea"; and the playful "Walking With My Love" finds Mary exchanging lines with the legendary Finbar Furey. All three performances are notable for their palpable sense of modesty and mutual admiration.
Two stand-out tracks come from particularly close to home, being written by Mary's son, Danny O'Reilly. "Faith In Fate" paints a stark contrast between the sheer despair of a broken relationship with a determined hopefulness to move on and patch things up. Managing to be simultaneously bleak and uplifting with its heady infusion of hurt and devoted affection, it's a song that plays to all the strengths of Mary's typically emotion-wrought interpretation. Offering a similar cocktail of emotions, "Wizard of Oz" is a mournful reflection on the search for strength and happiness, underpinned by a dreamy string arrangement over which Mary lays her heartwarming vocals.
Fulfilling the role of storyteller, Mary excels in bringing lifelike colour to the characters of "Marguerite And The Gambler," a Ricky Lynch song that recounts the familiar tale of many a traditional folk ballad, with its gamblers, true love, misguided familial intervention, heartbreak and devastation. Those purchasing the extended version of the album are handsomely rewarded with an exquisite reading of Chris Woods' "One In A Million," a story of true love that takes the mundanities of life and turns it in to utter magic, and proving beyond any doubt that Mary remains a song's best friend.
Paul Kelly's "They Thought I Was Asleep" benefits from a tender reading, cloaked in Mary's trademark warmth, depicting the torment of a child inadvertently witnessing from the back seat of a car, the emotional breakdown of his parents' relationship. Equally devastating, though of more epic proportions, Eric Bogle's "All the Fine Young Men" is made all the more disarming, thanks to the sheer reverence with which Mary furnishes this stark, anti-war anthem.
With a little less polish than some of her earlier releases, Stories From The Steeples steps forward as an intimate, unpretentious collection, bathed in a soft but radiant glow of effortlessness and wholehearted integrity. Time will tell, but Stories From The Steeples may well prove to be Mary's best yet.

Mary Black - Stories from the Steeples
For the last quarter-century, singer Mary Black has been a dominant presence in Irish music, both at home and abroad. She has shared stages, tv shows and recording studios with some of the most revered performers of her time. She has also played a frontline role in bringing Irish music, past and present, to an increasingly appreciative and ever-growing global audience. The San Francisco Chronicle has described her as "One of the best interpretative singers around".
At a time when less adventurous performers preferred to stick exclusively to the well-worn ballads from Ireland’s rich music heritage and the more obvious hits from contemporary writers, Mary explored the best work available from new composers and mined the rich seams they offered. That commitment to fresh material, combined with her unique interpretations of the songs she chooses, saw her release numerous albums that achieved platinum sales status and spawned countless hits. Indeed, one of Mary’s albums - No Frontiers - spent more than a year in the Irish Top 30!
To the acclaim and awards Mary has received over the years from both the public and the critics must also be added the esteem she has generated from her fellow artists. Indeed, many of them have recorded and performed live with her, including Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Joan Baez and Van Morrison, not to mention a host of Irish traditional musicians and singers. Along the way she has also recorded and performed with her siblings in The Black Family and with her highly successful sister Frances.
Coming from an intensely musical family, with her mother a fine singer and her father an entertaining fiddle player, Mary first came to the music public’s attention in the late ‘70s as a member of the group General Humbert with whom she recorded and toured. In 1983 she teamed up with guitarist/producer Declan Sinnott (later to become Christy Moore’s musical sidekick) and released her eponymously-named debut solo album. It reached No. 4 in the Irish Charts and is ranked among the best Irish albums of the early 1980's. It won her the Irish Independent Arts Award for Music, the first in a staggering sequence of awards that continue to come her way.SEGUIR LEYENDO
