Toru Takemitsu - Ran - BSO (1985) [Japon]

Suphala - Alien Ancestry

Suphala is a tabla player who has studied under a number of classically trained Indian masters, as well as playing with a number of pop and jazz musicians. This album weaves a wide range of music with a large group featuring Vijay Iyer on piano, Amir Elsaffar on trumpet and Bill Laswell adding his unique mojo to the proceedings. Suphala’s tablas develop a simmering feeling of incantation throughout the music. Bubbling and shifting and reshaping the rhythm with a sense of continual motion. Horns join in at times, developing a beguiling swirl, or horns, clarinet, oud and percussion.

The fast paced rhythm of the percussion is tuned at times so instruments resemble percussion that rings and resonates. Vijay Iyer makes his presence felt a few times on piano which adds further melodic flavor to the cascading percussion. It is the amazing sense of rhythm that is the most impressive thing about this album, Suphala has seemingly internalized everything and then developing the music in hypnotic fashion and at a dizzying pace. The texture and fabric of the music is constantly changing, with Laswell playing master of ceremonies, mixing the music and adding subtle hints of electronics and a near danceable sensibility. The melding of Indian music along with jazz and forms of improvisation are consistently interesting on this album. It is a central meeting place where diverse influences are combined together in a crucible of passionate music.

Kinan Azmeh: clarinet
Hadi Eldebek: oud
Amir Elsaffar: trumpet
John Hadfield: cajon, garhand

Imam Baildi - The Imam Baildi Cookbook

Andrew White - The Heart of the Celtic Guitar (1997)

THE HEART OF THE CELTIC GUITAR is cinematic and picturesque. This album recounts the struggles of the Irish people. White's music also has what could be called the thousand-mile stare. His compositions gaze off into the distance, into the horizon, into the heavens themselves. Then again, this is the very nature of the Celtic ballad. It is at once tough yet maudlin, plaintive yet yearning, secular yet mystical. White knows how to capture this complexity. Particularly strong tracks include "Home James," "To the Shores of Your Heart," and "Journey." All three of these compositions speak of hope and perseverance, two qualities that are central to the plight of the Irish. On this unique CD, the composer expressively communicates the story of the Celtic people, which is no easy task.

Chen Min - I Wish [China]

Lajkó Félix was born in Yugoslavia on December 17th, in 1974. He started playing the zyther at the age of 10. He first had a violin in his hand when he was 12, and has finished the six years of musical school in three years time; has then finished his formal studies and turned towards concerting. Played jazz with Dresch Quartet, contemporary music with the Hungarian pianist-composer György Szabados and was a member of the Ensemble Ritual Nova of Boris Kovač. Has performed with Romanian born, London based Alexander Balanescu, Min Tanaka from Japan, Noir Désir and with Boban Markovič. Has played in Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Belgrade, Paris, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, London, Edinbourgh, Tokyo, Bratislava, Venice, Verona, Wuppertal, Monte Carlo, Dublin, Oxford, Warsaw among others.

"My music is based on the delicacy and colourfulness of my instrument. I do not play any new types of musical genre, I only follow my own path and improvise and write music. I cannot see differences between musical styles and ways, so I play folk-, classical-, rock-, blues-, jazz-, and improvisational music.”

In September 2OO1, he has finished working on an album (Lajkó Félix and band plays – the forest recordings) that blends his talent as an instrumentalist and as a leader of a group, where musicians from different cultural background blend a very specific East-European sound never heard before.

2OO2, marks his first compilation album (Félix). It is a voyage of an artist, who is constantly seeking new meanings to music, and it is his first album where he also appeares as a solo musician.

November 2OO4, the release of „7”. Again a shocking experience from an artist who is on a constant musical journey. He takes us on a trip of classical, jazz, folk, improvisional music with his trio. Accompanying him is Antal Brasnyó on viola and Ferenc Kurina on double bass. Guest artist is Michael Babinchak on chello.

April 2007, came out his second compilation album, „Remény”.

In 2007 Lajko has played the leading role in Kornel Mundruczo’s new feature movie ’The Delta’, which was chosen as best film at the Hungarian Film Festival in 2008, and Felix was awarded for the best original music score of the festival. The film was chosen for the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.

His newest album (From the Bush) was released in 2009 in Hungary and Serbia. It is the second album recorded in the woods. This time with his long time partner Antal Brasnyo playing the viola. Since years day after day they practice three-four hours together, and it results in never before heard harmony in their improvisations. The album is a core of the music they play at the concerts, where the place and ambience both inspires the tunes of the duo.

Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas - Abundance

The fourth album from the dazzling duo of master fiddler Alasdair Fraser and dynamic cellist Natalie Haas - highly accomplished playing.

Alasdair Fraser is recognised as one of Scotland's finest exponents of the fiddle, and for some time now has enjoyed an artistic collaboration with the wonderful cellist Natalie Haas. Their debut album together - Fire And Grace - was voted Album Of The Year at the 2004 Scots Trad Music Awards, and this was followed in 2007 by their recording In The Moment, and in 2011 by Highlander's Farewell.

Once again they unleash their dazzling teamwork, with driving, dancing rhythms and a shared passion for taking the infectious melodies and grooves of Scottish and Celtic music on an exciting new journey. On this album they have invited eight session musicians to join them.

The Referendum tune was composed by Alasdair for the occasion of Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond's visit to Alasdair's fiddle course at Sabhal Mor Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, and to celebrate the upcoming referendum.

Long regarded as Scotland's premiere fiddle ambassador, as much for his warm personality as for his powerful playing, Alasdair's concert and recording career spans over 30 years, with a lengthy list of awards and accolades. The talented young Californian cellist Natalie Haas first met Alasdair at his Valley Of The Moon fiddle camp in California. They went on to successful international touring as one of Celtic music's top live acts, and recordings that have been acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic.

Alasdair Fraser (fiddles, baritone fiddle, viola, kalimba) and Natalie Haas (cellos, kalimba) with special guest musicians Donald Shaw (piano, accordion), James Macintosh (percussion), Corey DiMario (bass), Dominick Leslie (mandolin), Brittany Haas (fiddle), Hanneke Cassel (piano), Stefan Amidon (percussion), Kai Welch (trumpet) and Oscar Utterström (trombone, bass trombone, euphonium).

"Traditional Scottish fiddle and cello music of unrivalled beauty, eloquence and passion..."

"You would think they have been playing together for centuries. While his fiddle dances, her cello throbs darkly or plucks puckishly. Then Haas opens her cello's throat, joining Fraser in soaring sustains, windswept refrains and sudden, jazzy explosions..." (Boston Globe)

O'Stravaganza - Fantasy on Vivaldi and the Celtic music of Ireland

O'Stravaganza – Vivaldi in Ireland is an album by Hughes de Courson.

De Courson's work is a kind of World fusion music. There are only a handful of such arrangers who combine folk music and classical music in a similar vein. Other examples are Mark O'Connor ("The Fiddle Concerto" 1995), Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin ("Between Worlds", 1995) and Shaun Davey ("The Pilgrim" 1984).

His aim was to create a fusion of Irish music and Baroque music. It is mostly instrumental but there is one song "Lulaby for Diarmid" based on Gaelic poems from the Ossianic cycle, sung in Irish. The tune is adapted from Vivaldi's "Nisi Dominus cum dederit". The tracks with uillann pipes are the only ones in which the Irish element dominates over the baroque elements.

  • "Le Orfanelle della Poeta" (Baroque ensemble)
  • Nollaig Casey - fiddle
  • Emer Maycock - Irish flutes, Uilleann pipes
  • Ronan Le Bars - Uilleann pipes
  • Youenn Le Berre - Low whistles
  • Donal Siggins - bouzouki, mandolin
  • Myrdhin - Celtic harp
  • Isabelle Oliver - Celtic harp
  • Breda Maycock - singing

Les Yeux Noirs - Tiganeasca

Les Yeux Noirs is the name of a French band combining elements of jazz manouche and other Romani music, Yiddish and Klezmer music. The group was founded by two brothers, Eric and Olivier Slabiak, who both play violin. Other members of the band at its inception were: Franck Anastasio (double bass and electric bass), Georghe Ene (Accordion), Pascal Rondeau (guitar), and François Perchat (cello). Later, Aidje Tafial (drums) and Marian Miu (cymbalom) were added, and Georghe Ene was replaced on the accordion by Constantin Bitica.

Their music style combines traditional melodies from their many inspirations (Klezmer, Romani music, and Gypsy Jazz) as well as more modern Jazz styles. Many of their albums contain everything from a Yiddish lullaby to a rousing, dance-inspiring fusion of klezmer violin with modern sampling and Arabic drums.

Their name is taken from a 19th Century tune generally described (inaccurately) as a Russian Gypsy song, made popular by Django Reinhardt among many others.
