Mandekalou-The Art And Soul Of The Mande Griots

If there were such a thing as a West African supergroup, made up of people descended from a long line of distinguished musicians, then this is it. The first Mandekalou project, two years ago, set out to record "the great griot songs for the benefit of future generations", and was hailed a classic.
This second volume, again produced by Ibrahima Sylla, is even better, simply because his all-star cast sound even more confident and adventurous than before. The Malian guitarist Djelimady Tounkara is matched with an array of great singers, from the veterans Kasse Mady and Bako Dagnon to younger divas such as Kandia Kouyate. The lengthy songs are backed by an acoustic band featuring such instruments as the balafon and n'goni, but often dominated by the intricate guitar work of Tounkara, creating an inspired and powerful album.

VA - Festival In The Desert

Created in January 2001, the Festival Au Desert is held every year in the North of Mali, usually in Essakane, two hours from Timbuktu; sometimes directly at Timbuktu. It is organized by AITMA and EFES Associations together with Essakane Production. This festival seeks its origin in the big traditional Touareg festivities, as Takoubelt in Kidal and Temakannit in Timbuktu, which represented for a long time a place for decision making and exchange of information among the different communities. At the beginning, there were songs and touareg dances, poetries, camel rides and games.
Today, the Festival is opened to the external world and welcomes artists from other Malian regions, other African countries, but also from Europe and the rest of the world. During three days, around 30 artistic groups are invited from all around the world to present their art. "It's one of the few honest things I have been part of in a long, long time. It's amazing to play out in the sand. There are no doors, no gates and no money. It reminded me of why I sang in the first place. It's not commercialized." Robert Plant (Rolling Stone/March 6, 2003)
The Touaregs, nomads from the south of the Sahara, have a longstanding tradition of coming together for annual meetings called Takoubelt in the Kidal region or Temakannit in the Timbuktu region. These meetings allowed them to reconnect with each other (after the nomadic season), have fun, resolve conflicts between individuals or groups and to exchange ideas about the challenges that they were facing at the moment. These encounters are what “Le Festival au Désert” is built upon. “Le Festival au Désert”, in its present form was born in January 2001, at the dawn of the third millennium, following a meeting between Touaregs from Mali and European musicians.
The organization of the Festival, with its focus on combining modernity and tradition, is driven by a strong desire to open its doors to the outside world, while still preserving the cultures and traditions of the desert; for some this signifies being listened to and then recognized, for others it is a way to discover the desert through the inhabitants’ values of hospitality and tolerance. In the beginning, the Festival was nomadic in its nature: the first Festival took place in Tin Essako in 2001 and then it moved to Tessalit in 2002 in the Kidal region (North-East Mali). However, after the 3rd year in 2003, when the Festival was held in Essakane close to Timbuktu, the organizers had to start envisioning a fixed location for the Festival in light of the enormous preparation required and the ever-growing public interest and attendants. It’s in this way that we decided to make Essakane the permanent site of the Festival in order to begin building durable installations that could be used in the context of tourism promotion.
“Le Festival au Désert” is also a way to celebrate “La Flamme de la Paix” (The Flame of Peace), a name that was given to the ceremony where more than 3000 firearms were burned (and transformed into a monument) in 1996 in Timbuktu, putting a solemn end to the rebellion that, for years, shrouded northern Mali in gloom. Until today, this act still constitutes an example of how to manage conflicts, a model that ignites inspiration throughout the world. The major position that culture has taken in occidental economies prefigures the position that culture will have in the southern economies in a few years. Thus, “Le Festival au Désert” would like to become a factor in job creation in the near region, thereby promoting local development as well as bringing together the people of the earth.http://www.festival-au-desert.org/

VA- The Planet Sleeps

Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping.

Chicas-Spanish Female Singers 1962-1974

María Ostiz, Marisa Medina, Pili y Mili o Encarnita Polo. Esos nombres, de indudable eco rancio, no son los que uno espere encontrar asociados al garage y al beat sesentero, pero todas ellas fueron ye-yés, al menos por unos instantes. Elaborado por Vicente Fabuel, erudito de la edad antigua del pop español, '¡Chicas!' presenta un diseño atractivo y un completo libreto con fotos e información escrita por el propio Fabuel, que ha encontrado un filón en el sello barcelonés Belter (una tercera parte del material es de esa discográfica) y descubre historias alucinantes como la de Margarita Sierra, una madrileña que inició una exitosa carrera televisivo-musical en EE UU a principios de los 60, truncada por un infarto a los 26 años. Su incendiario 'Cha cha twist'en spanglish la revela como una Lupe beat en potencia.
Pocas fueron las mujeres que tuvieron una trayectoria ye-yé más o menos sólida, tal vez sólo Gelu, que aquí aparece con 'Y... y...', una versión de la francesa Dalida. Dado el amplio periodo que cubre la recopilación -de 1962 a 1974- y la ausencia de una escena robusta, la procedencia y características de las cantantes es bastante variopinta. Hay humoradas como 'Love, Love, Love', con Conchita Velasco, Alfredo Landa y Tony Leblanc haciendo de hippies para la BSO de 'Un día al año ser hippy no hace daño'; también multitud de proyectos fugaces compuestos por misses o modelos (entre ellos, una playmate yugoslava, Tania Velia); temas dirigidos al público infantil/adolescente (Pili Mili o Alicia Granados, que grabó su 'Batiendo palmas' a los 10 años) y, por supuesto, deliciosos bichos raros como Vainica Doble con su psicodélica 'La máquina infernal'... En esta última categoría se podrían encuadrar perlas como la extraordinaria potencia soul de los argentinos Los Tíos Queridos, con un joven Joe Borsani, la sexy 'Mi baby', de Marisel (que no Marisol, que también está), o Los Que Vivimos, que en su 'Contrapunto' se convierten en unos Jefferson Airplane hispanos, con un matador subidón de teclados psicodélicos.
Es inevitable que muchas de las canciones sean versiones de éxitos del momento, igual que lo es la presencia de los grandes compositores, arreglistas y productores españoles de la época: Santisteban, Calderón, Algueró, Manuel Alejandro... Todos/as contribuyeron a estos intentos, tímidos y esporádicos, de que hubiera cantantes modernas en España. Apenas se consiguió, pero el relato de ese fracaso es fascinante.

El Hulusi es originario de la tribu étnica Dai del suroeste de China, que se remonta a las dinastías Qin y Han (221 ??aC a 220 dC). El sonido del Hulusi original de la tribu Dai de Yunnan es inquietantemente bello, bastante suave, y tiene un muy puro sonido parecido al clarinete. Los hombres de la tribu Dai lo tocaban para expresar su amor a las mujeres, mientras que otras minorías étnicas a menudo tocaban el Hulusi en los campos cuando se tomaba un descanso en la siembra o la cosecha.
Su nombre viene de su forma y su sonido: 'hulu' que significa calabaza, y 'si'
que significa seda, en referencia al sonido claro de tipo clarinete que produce.
el Hulusi emite un sonido bastante dulce y a la vez se pueden generar sonidos parecidos a las gaitas, ya que se puede facilmente emplear el metodo de respiración circular.

Matthew Paul Miller, más conocido como Matisyahu (West Chester, Pensilvania, 1979), es un cantante estadounidense de reggae, aunque en su música mezcla influencias de los géneros sincopados como el dub y el ska. Muy afín con la cultura reggae, utiliza en sus letras temáticas espirituales derivadas de su condición de judío jasídico. Matisyahu es el equivalente hebreo al nombre Mateo.
Combinando los sonidos de Bob Marley y las influencias del rabino Shlomo Carlebach, aunque manteniendo la identidad de una música propia, los conciertos de Matisyahu comunican una poderosa experiencia al público. In Kirango, nabij Segou, worden masker-festivals gevierd. Zo’n maskerade is een soort van ‘totaal-theater’ met zang, dans en levensgrote poppen, waaraan elke aanwezige deelneemt. De Bamana en de Bozo hebben ieder hun eigen vorm van maskerade, welke hun (sociale) achtergrond reflecteert. Tijdens de maskerades treden grote poppen op, waarin de dansers verscholen gaan. De poppen representeren mythische dieren, geesten en mensen, en dienen als metaforen voor menselijke deugden en ondeugden. Het aantal bijbehorende liederen bedraagt zo’n 200 stuks.
De muziek die de dans en zang begeleidt wordt met name op trommels gespeeld. Bij de Bamana op de chun (grote houten keteldrum, bespeeld met beide handen), bòngolo (aan een kant bespannen, cylindrische houten trommel, bespeeld met dunne stokken) en nganga (aan twee zijden bespannen, cylindrische houten drum, bespeeld met dikke stok). Het vrouwenkoor houdt het ritme vast met houten kleppers (tegere) en kalabas-ratels. Om de poppen te introduceren wordt een antilope-hoorn (buru) bespeeld, om ze te leiden een hand-bel (daro). Naast de zang bestaat het instrumentarium van de Bozo uit bòngolo en nganga.

The puppets represent mythical animals, spirits and human beings, which serve as metaphors for human virtues and vices. The repertoire of accompanying songs consists of more then 200. There are up to ten songs per character. The music is performed on various drums. The female chorus keeps time with wooden clappers (tegere) and calabash rattles. Brasil tiene un riqueza musical extraordinaria y personalísima. El crisol humano que constituyen sus habitantes, mezcla heterogénea de razas blanca, india y negra, ha dado como resultado un sinfín de músicas propias o, cuando menos, de adaptaciones propias de ritmos foráneos. En Brasil la música está en todas partes. Y el forró es la música de la fiesta, fuertemente identificado con las celebraciones de junio (San Juan, San Antonio, San Pedro), música europea, africana, india pero, sobre todo, brasileña.

Varios de los estilos musicales de Brasil que se congregan bajo el termino genérico de forró, cuyo origen proviene del Nordeste de Brasil, derivan de los bailes populares del siglo XIX: arrasta-pé, en el que las parejas bailan arrastrando los pies contra el suelo; xote (análogo, por así decirlo, al “chotis” madrileño, un baile en parejas) y xaxado, un baile en linea. El sonido base del forró gira en torno a tres instrumentos básicos: el acordeón, el triángulo y la zabumba (zambomba).

La música de India es conocida, a nivel internacional, como resultado de los influyentes conciertos de cítara de Ravi Shankar y, más recientemente, gracias a las bandas sonoras de películas populares como "Slumdog Millionaire", "Monsoon Wedding" ("La boda del monzón") y "Bend it Like Beckham" ("Quiero ser como Beckham"). Si bien es cierto que la cítara es importante, existen otros instrumentos indios clásicos igualmente significativos como la tabla y el santoor. Igualmente, más allá de Bollywood, existen otros muchos géneros musicales pop y tradicionales tales como la música rítmica del baile punyabí (llamada bhangra), y los qawwali devocionales sufí, que se hicieron conocidos gracias al gran cantante pakistaní Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Aunque ningún CD en particular puede hacer justicia a la diversidad musical proveniente de India en la actualidad, esta colección ofrece una amplia muestra: desde los sonidos tradicionales a los éxitos pop de Bollywood y las canciones contemporaneas que mezclan las influencias de Oriente y Occidente. Este trabajo de Putumayo confirma que la música de India es tan diversa y fascinante como el país mismo.
